The founding meeting of the Citizens’ Movement Solidarity—whose formation was previously announced by Goran Ješić in response to the regime’s repression of students and citizens protesting the lack of accountability for the tragedy at the Novi Sad train station—was held today in Novi Sad.
The initiator of Solidarity, Goran Ješić, said that the goal of the new organization is to fight for a “new social agreement” aimed at building a state governed by the rule of law and an open society. He stated that the only democratic way out of the current situation is the formation of a transitional expert government. “That expert government will have the task of preparing all the conditions for free elections.
In its formation, it is necessary to ensure the participation of all vital sectors of society, which, following the model of plenary decision-making, will delegate representatives to the transitional expert government,” Ješić said at the founding meeting in Novi Sad, which was attended by representatives of numerous organizations and individuals from different parts of Serbia.
He pointed out that the current regime in Serbia cannot be a participant in the new social agreement because it has destroyed all democratic institutions and abolished citizens’ right to free elections. He added that the new social contract should be built from the ground up, from all local communities, and should include all social sectors and citizens who believe in the ideas of solidarity, responsibility, and respect for basic human rights.
“It is time to build a political program that will finally offer a perspective to this society. Our goal is clear: we want a country where everyone has equal chances for a dignified life! From local to central levels—we are changing the system from the roots!” said Goran Ješić.
At the meeting, a decision was made to establish a citizens’ association, and the Statute of the new organization was adopted. Economist and engineer Jasna Matić was elected international secretary, and lawyer Vladimir Horovic was elected president of the Ethics Committee of the Citizens’ Movement Solidarity.
