An important chapter in the history of democracy in Serbia has come to an end.

Dragoljub Mićunović has left us.

A philosopher, politician, the first president of the Democratic Party, a persecuted professor, never angry, never a slave to vanity, always open-minded, youthfully curious, steadfast, and optimistic. Consistent in his principles.

The passing of Mićunović is an immense loss for Serbian society and politics. He was both a witness to and a participant in many events and upheavals. There are fewer and fewer people like him — people whose departure leaves behind a vacuum that cannot simply be filled by another name.

Regardless of political agreements or differences, everyone could learn from him that when a person is honorable within themselves, human dignity and a sense of purpose remain unchanged, even while presiding over the National Assembly.

Thank you for this lesson, Professor.

My condolences to the family and to Serbia.
