Ješić Discusses Serbia’s European Future and Conditions for Free Elections in Slovenia

Goran Ješić, President of the Citizens' Movement Solidarity, met in Slovenia with Meira Hot, Vice President of the Slovenian National Assembly, and Matjaž Nemec, Member of the European Parliament, to discuss Serbia’s European future, the struggle for free and fair elections, and the restoration of democracy in Serbia.

During the meetings, it was emphasized that Serbia cannot return to the European path without establishing the fundamental conditions of democracy: a government that can be democratically replaced, free media, an independent judiciary, the fight against systemic corruption, the protection of civil rights, and an end to the abuse of state institutions for the benefit of a single political party.

In line with the previously adopted Platform for a European Serbia, Ješić called on Slovenian and European parliamentarians to support the urgent establishment of an independent, long-term monitoring mission for Serbia’s electoral process.

Such monitoring must not be limited to election day alone. It should cover the entire electoral process, including the voter register, media imbalance, pressure on voters, pressure on employees in the public sector, vote-buying, misuse of public office during election campaigns, abuse of state resources, campaign financing, voter migration, the work of election commissions, and the conduct of institutions before, during, and after elections.

Ješić stressed that without free and fair elections, Serbia cannot achieve genuine progress toward European integration or sustainable democratic change.

The participants agreed that Serbia’s future lies within the European Union, but that its European path must be based on the rule of law, free elections, independent institutions, and clear alignment with the democratic values and foreign policy of Europe.
